Apurba Sarma is an eminent writer from Assam whose forte has been fiction and also film studies. He has penned a number of critically acclaimed short story collections in Assamese and also contributed articles to internationally known serious film journals like Deep Focus. His contributions to film studies and criticism in Assam were recognized nationally in the form of the National Award for the Best Book on Cinema in 2002 for his work Axomiya Chalachitrar Saan Pohor (Light and Shade in Assamese Cinema). He had earlier been awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 2000 for his outstanding contribution to Assamese fiction.

Son of Tilak Chandra Sarma, editor of the Times of Assam, Assam’s first English weekly (1896), Apurba Sarma was born in Halem in Assam’s Sonitpur district in 1943. With a Master’s degree in Economics from Gauhati University. He started his career as a journalist in The Assam Tribune. After a brief stint there, he switched careers to teach Economics as a lecturer in Nowgong Girls College, retiring as its Principal. He then went back to journalism, serving as an editor of Ajir Asom, a reputed Assamese daily, for about ten years.
